Developing the iOS Car Widgets concept, I explore how Apple's design principles can enhance the integration of essential car functions into a seamless widget experience. This project focuses on rethinking the user experience in automotive contexts, emphasizing simplicity and functionality within Apple’s design ecosystem.

This project focuses on designing automotive widgets for iOS, with an emphasis on maintaining the visual consistency of Apple's existing widgets. By adhering to Apple's widget design guidelines, the goal was to seamlessly integrate the new automotive widgets into the broader ecosystem while ensuring an intuitive and familiar user experience. The design prioritizes simplicity, functionality, and visual harmony with other native iOS widgets.

PHEV

This widget provides a clear view of the battery charge and fuel level for a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), allowing drivers to quickly assess the vehicle's energy status. My design choices focused on making the information immediately accessible, with distinct visual elements for electric and fuel levels. I carefully selected color coding and iconography to maintain a minimalistic yet functional design, ensuring the user can easily determine when to charge or refuel.

Engine temperature

This widget displays the engine temperature of an internal combustion vehicle, offering the driver a quick and intuitive way to monitor the car's thermal status. In designing this widget, I prioritized clarity and immediate recognition, using a simple temperature gauge with clear markers to signal safe or critical levels.

Fuel and range v. 1

This widget shows both the fuel level and the estimated range remaining for an internal combustion engine vehicle, helping drivers quickly estimate how far they can travel before needing to refuel. My design focused on balancing two key pieces of information - the amount of fuel remaining and the estimated range - in a compact, easy-to-read format. By carefully choosing the font size, spacing and colour accents, I ensured that the widget provided clear feedback without clutter, allowing the driver to make informed decisions at a glance.

Engine on or off status

This widget displays the engine on or off status and allows for remote control of the engine. Designed for convenience, the widget provides a clear visual cue for the engine’s current state, with a simple toggle function for turning the engine on or off remotely. My focus as a designer was to create an intuitive interaction, ensuring the control was easy to access while preventing accidental activation. The use of clear iconography and feedback mechanisms ensures the user has full control over the engine’s status.

EV battery v. 1

This widget displays the battery charge level, estimated time until full charge, and charging power for an EV (Electric Vehicle), along with the estimated range. Designed to provide comprehensive charging and range information at a glance, it helps drivers easily track their vehicle's status while charging. My role in designing this widget was to ensure that multiple data points - charge level, time, power, and range - were presented in a clean, organized layout.

MPG

This widget displays the vehicle's miles per gallon (MPG) along with a small graph illustrating fuel efficiency trends over time. It provides a straightforward way for drivers to monitor their vehicle’s fuel efficiency at a glance. The design focuses on clarity and immediate readability, presenting the MPG value prominently and using the graph to show trends in fuel consumption. This helps drivers make informed decisions about their driving habits and optimize fuel usage.

Tire pressure

This widget displays the tire pressure for each tire, providing a quick and clear overview of the vehicle’s tire health. It shows individual pressure readings and s any tires that may be under or over-inflated. The design ensures that critical information is easily accessible, with visual indicators that draw attention to potential issues, helping drivers maintain optimal tire performance and safety.

EV battery v. 2

This widget offers a detailed view of an EV's battery status, including current charge level, estimated time until full charge, charging power, and the estimated driving range. The redesigned layout features a central battery gauge with surrounding data points for time, power, and range, each presented with distinct visual markers. This layout allows drivers to quickly interpret their vehicle’s charging progress and range estimates.

Fuel and range v. 2

This widget provides an overview of the vehicle’s miles per gallon (MPG) along with a compact graph that tracks fuel efficiency trends. The redesigned layout features a central MPG display with a dynamically updating graph below it, showing recent changes in fuel consumption. This setup allows drivers to quickly gauge their current MPG and understand trends in their fuel efficiency.
